TelNet Cellular POTS FAQs

POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines are the traditional copper telephone lines that have been in use since Alexander Graham Bell’s invention of the telephone in 1876. These lines are not only used for voice calls but also support analog devices such as security alarms, fire alarm panels, fax machines, and building entry systems.

Maintaining copper telephone lines has become increasingly expensive. Telecommunication companies are transitioning to newer technologies like VoIP and fiber-optic cables. The FCC acknowledged this shift in an August 2019 order, which removed certain obligations for local telephone companies to offer legacy services at regulated rates.

There isn’t a specific date when all POTS lines will disappear. However, AT&T announced in March 2022 that it plans to reduce its copper footprint by 50% by 2025. Although there were rumors about POTS lines ceasing to function on August 2, 2022, the reality is that these lines are gradually becoming more costly and less sustainable, prompting customers to seek alternative phone options.

Availability depends on your location, but many telecom providers still offer traditional landline services over copper POTS lines. Be prepared for high installation and monthly service costs, and note that the aging infrastructure may lead to less reliable service over time.

Replacing all legacy devices can be challenging and expensive. Instead, consider affordable digital solutions like TelNet’s Cellular POTS, which provides a digital connection that mimics a traditional POTS line for legacy devices. Other options include digital fax services and simple IP to analog line conversions.

TelNet provides a fully managed installation with includes device placement, cellular network testing, line hook up, and customer acceptance testing
